Empowering Innovation in Aerospace: MEAN WELL Supports Propulsive Landers @ Georgia Tech

Viewers : 97

MEAN WELL is proud to support Propulsive Landers @ Georgia Tech, an innovative student-led engineering team at the Georgia Institute of Technology developing reusable hybrid rocket and vertical takeoff and landing (VTVL) technology.

With more than 120 members, GTPL brings together students from multiple engineering disciplines to tackle the challenges of propulsion, avionics, guidance and navigation, controls, structures, and vehicle integration. The team's long-term goal is to develop and demonstrate an autonomous reusable hybrid rocket lander.

From Engine Development to Integrated Testing

Propulsive Landers @ Georgia Tech achieved a significant milestone with Georgia Tech's first hybrid rocket engine hotfire, marking an important step forward in the team's propulsion development and testing efforts.

As the team advances its rocket and vehicle systems, its ground test stand requires a complex electrical infrastructure supporting PLCs, expansion modules, valves and solenoids, sensors, servos, microcontrollers, and ignition-related hardware across multiple voltage levels.

MEAN WELL Product Application

To support this test infrastructure, MEAN WELL is providing 12 DIN-rail power supplies across 24 V, 12 V, and 5 V power rails.

The 24 V architecture combines XDR-240E-24, XDR-480E-24, and XDR-75E-24 supplies to support solenoid and electrically actuated control valves, PLC expansion modules, and passive sensors. XDR-120E-12 supplies provide 12 V power for solenoid valves and the high-voltage generator coil associated with the rocket engine ignition system, while HDR-60-5 supplies provide a 5 V rail for throttle-valve control, servos, and microcontrollers.

By distributing power across dedicated voltage rails, the MEAN WELL supplies support the control, sensing, and actuation systems required for GTPL's ground testing.

Supporting the Next Generation of Aerospace Engineers

Propulsive Landers @ Georgia Tech gives students hands-on experience designing, building, integrating, and testing advanced aerospace systems. Its development program includes a 1,000 N-class hybrid rocket engine, a reusable VTVL lander architecture, and a closed-loop nitrous throttling system.

Through iterative development and ground testing, students gain practical experience translating engineering concepts into functioning systems and addressing the challenges of complex system integration.
MEAN WELL is pleased to contribute power solutions to GTPL's test infrastructure and support the next generation of engineers as they advance their aerospace technology.
